Welcome to another episode on Engine English today we will be looking at idioms. Idioms are one of the hardest parts of learning a language. For those of you who don’t know, an idiom is a phrase that has a meaning, but the meaning is not clear from the words themselves. If you translate an idiom word for word, it sometimes makes no sense at all. They are like puzzles and even native speakers can get confused when someone uses a phrase that they’ve never heard of.

A: 明天就放假了，你回老家吗？
míng tiān jiù fàng jià le ， nǐ huí lǎo jiā ma ？
Holiday is starting tomorrow! Are you going back to hometown?
B: 回啊，好不容易有8天的长假。
huí a ， hǎo bù róng yì yǒu bā tiān de cháng jià 。
Yes, we finally got an 8-day holiday.
A: 是啊，今年中秋节和国庆节一起放，好多人准备去旅游。
shì a ， jīn nián zhōng qiū jié hé guó qìng jié yì qǐ fàng ， hǎo duō rén zhǔn bèi qù lǚ yóu 。
Right, this year the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day are together, so many people are going to travel.
B: 你呢？有什么安排？
nǐ ne ？ yǒu shén me ān pái ？
What about you? What are your plans?
A: 我准备去新疆旅游，票和酒店都订好了。
wǒ zhǔn bèi qù xīn jiāng lǚ yóu ， piào hé jiǔ diàn dōu dìng hǎo le 。
I'm going to Xinjiang. I've booked tickets and hotels.
B: 这个季节新疆很漂亮，有的地方已经开始下雪了。
zhè gè jì jié xīn jiāng hěn piào liàng ， yǒu de dì fāng yǐ jīng kāi shǐ xià xuě le 。
Xinjiang is very beautiful this season, and It has begun to snow in some places.
A: 是啊，我很期待去看雪。
shì a ， wǒ hěn qī dài qù kàn xuě 。
Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing the snow.
B: 祝你玩得开心。
zhù nǐ wán de kāi xīn 。
Have a good time.
A: 你也是，回家一路顺风。
nǐ yě shì ， huí jiā yí lù shùn fēng 。
You too, have a safe trip home.
B: 我买不到高铁票，要开车回去。希望不要太堵车。
wǒ mǎi bú dào gāo tiě piào ， yào kāi chē huí qù 。 xī wàng bù yào tài dǔ chē 。
I could't get a high-speed train ticket. I have to drive back. I hope there's not too much traffic.
A: 是啊，堵车太麻烦了。
shì a ， dǔ chē tài má fán le 。
Yeah, traffic jam is too much trouble.

放假 Have a holiday （Beginner）

¡Estamos en el mes de septiembre! y para nosotros los mexicanos no significa nada más que celebración.

Sin duda alguna, una de las festividades mexicanas más reconocidas, ¡la lucha por la Independencia de México! y en la que prácticamente en todos los rincones de la República Mexicana se celebra de una manera muy similar, cada noche del 15 de septiembre.

Arma una barra de dulces mexicanos donde tus invitados puedan deleitarse con un ate, jamoncillos, obleas de cajeta, gelatinas y hasta con un delicioso pan dulce con café de olla, los complementos ideales.

Construye el ambiente de la noche mexicana con banderitas, matracas, silbatos, trompetas, confeti y manteles de tela. El colorido del papel picado le dará un toque súper especial. 

Deja el espacio adecuado para que todos puedan bailar. Un poco de salsa, unas cumbias y hasta algo de banda. Recuerda que no es fiesta, si no hay baile.

 
La comida es necesaria para darle el ambiente de fiesta, prepara todo para armar una verbena popular o una feria de pueblo. Cada invitado puede llevar un platillo y entre tostadas, flautas, pozole, quesadillas y demás antojitos mexicanos pueden armar una mesa de lujo.

 
¿Qué hay más mexicano que la lotería? Compra unas cartas, prepara frijolitos o corcholatas y jueguen toda la noche. Pueden poner castigos con shots de tequila para hacerla más interesante.

El festejo asemeja lo ocurrido durante el famoso “Grito de Dolores”, aquella noche de rebelión, en la que el cura Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, gritó a los cuatro vientos, frente a los congregados a las afueras de su iglesia ubicada en el pequeño pueblo de Dolores, en el Estado de Hidalgo. Esta fecha conmemora el esfuerzo del pueblo mexicano contra la conquista española.

Como verás el objetivo de las familias mexicanas es reunirse, compartir, comer, bailar y pasar una noche muy agradable conviviendo con los suyos.
