Am I too formal? Too familiar? Is this person a relative? In Indian English, politeness is built into how people address each other. This episode explains the titles and address words you will hear, how a polite "no" works, and the hospitality phrases you meet as a guest. What you will learn: • Sir and ma'am: why they are used so widely, and first name + sir • "-ji", the respect suffix, and haan-ji / nahi-ji • Regional respect markers: -garu, -avare, saab, saar • Uncle and aunty for any older person, not only relatives • Brother and sister words: bhaiya, didi, chetta, chechi, anna, akka, dada, paaji • Names and seniority, and the indirect "no": I'll try, let's see, a bit difficult • Hospitality phrases, and why "thank you" is used less among family • Practice situations, five listening strategies and self-check questions Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes. Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
