One story, told three times — and the design matters, because used wrongly it will not work. The first telling is slow, one sentence at a time, with the English meaning after each line. The second is Malayalam only, at moderate speed, no English at all. The third is at natural speed, the way a Malayali would actually tell it. Your job is not to understand everything the first time. Your job is to notice how much more you understand on the second telling than the first, and on the third than the second. WHY THIS DESIGN It comes from Stephen Krashen's argument that language is acquired above all through comprehensible input — language you can understand, at a level just beyond where you are. Not drills, not rules. The strong version of that claim has been argued about for forty years and is contested. But the core observation has held up well: learners who get large amounts of input they can actually follow acquire the language, and learners who only study rules do not. The difficulty has always been supply. Real Malayalam is too fast and too dense for a learner; learner Malayalam is artificial and boring. A graded story told three times at increasing speed solves both — the first telling makes it comprehensible, the third makes it real. So do not stop the recording. Do not look anything up. Let it wash over you. Some of it will be lost and that is entirely fine.
