Here is a conversation that happens constantly and that most learners cannot have. Somebody asks what you do in your free time. You have the vocabulary for work, family, food and travel. You do not have the vocabulary for the thing that actually makes you interesting. THE QUESTIONS ഒഴിവുസമയത്ത് എന്ത് ചെയ്യും? what do you do in your free time? എന്താണ് നിങ്ങളുടെ ഹോബി? what is your hobby? നിങ്ങൾക്ക് എന്താണ് ഇഷ്ടം? what do you like? എന്ത് തരം സിനിമയാണ് ഇഷ്ടം? what kind of films do you like? എന്തെങ്കിലും കളിക്കുമോ? do you play any sport? നിങ്ങൾ വായിക്കാറുണ്ടോ? do you read? ഒഴിവുസമയം is the key noun — ഒഴിവ് means a gap, a vacancy, a break. And ഒഴിവുദിവസം is a day off. THE VERB PATTERN THAT CARRIES THE ANSWERS The habitual, -ആറുണ്ട് — genuinely useful and badly undertaught. It means "I am in the habit of doing". ഞാൻ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാറുണ്ട് I read books ഞാൻ സിനിമ കാണാറുണ്ട് I watch films ഞാൻ പാട്ട് കേൾക്കാറുണ്ട് I listen to music ഞാൻ വൈകുന്നേരം നടക്കാറുണ്ട് I walk in the evenings ഞാൻ അധികമൊന്നും ചെയ്യാറില്ല I don't do much The negative is -ആറില്ല, and it is a much better way to describe your practice than a flat present tense, because it describes your habit rather than this moment.
