She Said, He Told Me, She Was Like: Reported Speech at Home | Real British English #039
說明
At home we pass on messages all day: what Mum said, what the teacher told us, what the neighbour asked. Learners often translate one verb from their own language and say "She said me she was tired". They also keep question word order and say "He asked me where was the remote".
In this episode:
• Say or tell?
• Changing the tense, and when you don't need to
• Reported questions and requests
• Story words: she was like, he goes
• A home scene
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
Key phrases from this episode:
She said she was tired. — no person after said
She told me she was tired. — me comes straight after told
He said to me that he was busy. — say to + person is possible, but less common
Dad told us dinner was ready. — us after told
"I'm coming later." → He said he's coming later. — he is still coming
"The shop shuts at six." → She said the shop shuts at six. — it still does
She was like, "No way!" — she said, or she reacted (casual)
And I'm like, "Seriously?" — and I said (casual, present tense for a lively story)
He goes, "Where's my phone?" — he said (casual)
Was like can show a feeling, not exact words: I was like, oh no. — I felt worried.
