The mistake foreigners make at a death in Kerala is not a language mistake. It is talking too much. This short, serious class gives you the words, three short sentences for the family, and a clear list of what not to say. Then what to do instead: go to the house, sit, be present, ask ചോറ് കഴിച്ചോ?, and do something specific without waiting to be asked. It ends with what to send if you are abroad. Two sentences are enough. Words and phrases in this class: മരണം (maranam) – death മരിച്ചു (marichu) – died അന്തരിച്ചു (antharichu) – passed away (respectful) അനുശോചനം (anushochanam) – condolence വളരെ വിഷമമായി (valare vishamamaayi) – I'm very sorry ദുഃഖത്തിൽ പങ്കുചേരുന്നു (dukhathil pankucherunnu) – I share in your grief എന്ത് പറയണമെന്ന് അറിയില്ല (enthu parayanamennu ariyilla) – I don't know what to say സങ്കടപ്പെടണ്ട (sankadappedanda) – do not grieve ചോറ് കഴിച്ചോ? (choru kazhicho?) – have you eaten? എന്തെങ്കിലും വേണോ? (enthenkilum veno?) – do you need anything? ഞാൻ എന്തെങ്കിലും ചെയ്യണോ? (njaan enthenkilum cheyyano?) – shall I do something? എന്ത് വേണമെങ്കിലും വിളിക്കൂ (enthu venamenkilum vilikkoo) – call me for anything at all ഞാൻ ഇവിടെയുണ്ട് (njaan ivideyundu) – I am here In this class: • The respectful word: അന്തരിച്ചു, not just മരിച്ചു • Three short sentences for the family, including the most honest one • What not to say, and why explanations wound • Presence over speech: ചോറ് കഴിച്ചോ? and doing something without being asked Quizzes below.
