8 марта: как появился день борьбы за женские права.
Больше ста лет назад женщины вышли на массовую демонстрацию, требуя равных прав с мужчинами. 8 марта — Международный женский день. Как же появился этот праздник и какие еще «женские» праздники принято отмечать. История международного женского дня началась в 1908 году, когда работающие женщины Нью-Йорка вышли на «прогулку по Бродвею» — так в некоторых газетах назвали шествие женщин в знак протеста против тяжелых условий труда. Женский марш организовала Мод Мэлоун — американская суфражистка и основательница Союза прогрессивных женщин. В «прогулке» принимали участие женщины из разных слоев общества и многие мужчины, согласные с идеями суфражисток. 16 февраля они вышли на улицы, требуя равных прав, повышения оплаты труда и права голоса для женщин, и несмотря на незаконность акции, на марше никто не был задержан.
Спустя год, в 1909 году, в США учредили праздник, вдохновленный этим маршем, — Национальный женский день, он отмечался в последнее воскресенье февраля.
Борьба за женские права продолжалась по всему миру, в 1910 году году в Копенгагене состоялась вторая Международная конференция трудящихся женщин. На ней Клара Цеткин, немецкая политическая деятельница и активистка борьбы за права женщин, предложила ежегодно праздновать Международный женский день. На конференции присутствовали более 100 женщин из 17 стран: представительницы профсоюзов, социалистических партий и объединений работающих женщин. Идея Цеткин получила единодушную поддержку, однако дата не была зафиксирована и в разных странах праздник отмечался в разные дни марта. 
Итак, женщины по всему миру выходили на демонстрации и шествия, призывая власти предоставить им право голоса, улучшить условия труда рабочих, а также искоренить классовое разделение в обществе. Однако не было одной даты, ассоциирующейся с «женским днем». Почему же мы отмечаем его именно 8 марта? История выбора этой даты ведет в Россию, а именно в неспокойный февраль 1917 года.

One of the weirdest things about British culture is the way we enjoy our visits to cemeteries. Cemeteries, otherwise known as graveyards, are places where you can find British people relaxing with a cup of tea, perhaps, uh, a bottle of Coca-Cola or with a sandwich. It's a little bit strange. Now, I've lived in many countries across the world, and I have to say that only in Britain are we completely detached from the feelings associated with tombs, graves and dead people.
 If you go to a restaurant in the UK, particularly a cafe, you may even find that it was once a church.  There are churches around which close, and then they're sold to restaurant owners, or they become pubs, and you find yourself walking across these tombs without even thinking about it. To avoid any difficulties or problems with this. Some restaurants and pubs will lay carpets on the floor so that you won't actually see the names of those who've died.  Not to worry though, because these people who've died, usually they've died hundreds of years ago. It's not like they died last week. I'm not sure if that makes it worse or makes it better.
