Can these three conjunctions be replaced without effecting the meaning of the sentence. Whereas/while/conversely I am working hard to improve my English writing skills, whereas/while/conversely there is no significant improvement in my writing style.

I think the key idea here is that whereas & while highlight the contrast between 2 DIFFERENT things in the same sentence as in the example about Japan & Russia. You are talking about the SAME topic- the improvement (or not )in your writing skills so you would need to use but or however for contrast. Using conversely would highlight an OPPOSITE contrast in 2 things with a direct relationship to each other . For example "I've been working hard on my English and my writing has improved a lot. Conversely, my speaking seems to have got worse.

You can't use any of those in that sentence. You need 'but' or 'however'. You could also use 'although' in front of the first clause.

Hey, This is a good question about 3 different conjunctions which are easy to confuse. Before I answer your question, I just wanted to note that these conjunctions differ in frequency. “While” is quite common, “whereas” less common and “conversely” is rare and formal. In the example sentence, I agree with the last comment that none of these words fit that context. Generally, you can use “while” and “whereas” interchangeably as long as you are talking about a contrast (because “while” also has a different meaning). For example: Japan is an island whereas Russia is not. Japan is an island while Russia is not. The conjunction “conversely” is used to suggest a contrast not just in a simple fact but in someone’s opinion/outlook. As such you will see it in academic writing/essays/newspapers etc
