Are movies useful for learning a language? In general I would say yes, but it does depend on your level and objective in learning a language. Modernized fairy tales are useful for young learners. Movies for teenagers contain a lot of colloquial expressions which might be useful for teenagers at a B1 plus level, but not below. Adults with a B1 level can profit from crime movies, which are plenty in German.
