The other day, I came across a phrasal verb, which is "chew out" e.g. "I couldn't wait to see my parents chew him out."
Apparently, not everybody uses this phrasal verb and that's why I'd like to know from native speakers what'd be the best option that conveys the same without being too formal. Cheers!

‘Chew him out’ is widely known. But even more common here, especially from a child, would be ‘yell at him’.
