🇬🇧 The Day a King Lost His Head In 1649, King Charles I of England was executed in London. After years of disagreement with Parliament, England entered a civil war. Some people supported the King and believed he should have absolute authority. Others believed that Parliament should have more power. The King lost the war and was put on trial — something almost unimaginable at the time. He was found guilty of acting against his own people. On a cold day in January, Charles I was executed in front of a large crowd. For the first time in British history, a king had been publicly put to death by his own country. Britain became a republic for a short period before the monarchy later returned. Even today, historians continue to debate whether this moment protected freedom or created dangerous instability. If you had lived in England in 1649, would you have supported the King or Parliament?
