They went out for dinner yesterday.
It’s been a long time since my mom has been here so we ate unagi (Japanese fish) for lunch.

They went for a meal together yesterday.
It has been a long time since my mom last visited, and we ate unagi (Japanese fish) for lunch.
* or you could say 'to meet his in-laws' (his wife's parents)
