I’ve paid attention to Thai music since early this year after I discovered Phum Viphrut. The truth is that the more I discover Thai music, the deeper I’m falling for it; Thai artists are on the cutting edge and their music videos are mesmerizing with pastel-like visual aesthetics. In particular, I came across this Thai band called Rocketman and want to talk about this amazing team. When you first hear “Rocketman,” you might think about the 2019 movie with the same title about Elton John. If you did, you almost got how the band got their name. According to the Thai band’s Facebook page, the band was formed by longtime childhood friends Mut, Nut, Pon, Om and Kwan in 2013, bearing the name of Elton John’s 1972 hit “Rocketman.” (The funny thing is that they wrote on their Facebook that they were "influenced by artists like Radiohead, Daniel Caesar, DEAN, and T-Square." Not Elton John. 😄) Afterwards, they got signed to Rats Records, the Thai music label where Phum Viphrut is also signed to. Under the label, Rocketman has released numerous singles such as “Fool Me,” “Love You Wrong” and more. The first Rocketman track I ran into was an upbeat track called "Lost Film." In this chill, refreshing fusion of New Jack Swing and Jazz, the band successfully amazes listeners with their fresh mix of two different genres. Satisfying the listeners who enjoyed this track, the band continues presenting different styles of tracks, ranging from band music to soul, with their twists. Simply speaking, they easily dazzle listeners by mixing unexpected sounds in a very pleasant way. And that's one of their strengths. (The fact that they sing every track in English is also a big plus.) Rocketman categorizes their music as Experimental Pop & Soul. But I'm sure that this versatile band doesn't confine their identity to anything and is ready to shake the scene with their unique music. I can’t wait to see this band blow up soon. So, make sure to check out their music!
