My closest family are my parents and grandparents. I wouldn't say I keep contact with other members (even though my family is quite extended). There were some wrong situations between us. Besides, we have different opinions on some topics and pursue separate lifestyles (for example - our approach to drinking alcohol is completely different). It's impossible for us to connect or gather together. Not to mention finding common topics to talk about.
