Correct. These can be used interchangeably. The difference in use, however, changes the tone slightly. For example "it's better to stay apart for a while" is more direct and demonstrates a level of conviction in the speakers decision. "It would be better if we stayed apart for a while" uses the polite form "would" making it less direct and more soft.
