Language Learning Headaches

I'm wondering, how many of you get headaches when trying to learn a new language?

Do you feel like you are making progress when you get them? Or is it unnecessary pressure?

You've already mentioned wine in your profile, so I'm just going to add one word of advice: Aspirin ;)

Oh trust and believe me you get them. I had it once when I was studying Spanish. Now I'm getting them now with Portuguese. But I believe that having a headache when it comes to those situations is a result of your brain actually figuring how to construct your thoughts. Plus your brain is sending more oxygen to them areas where they're needed the most. So it's ok to get them. You'll get used to it and won't have them anymore once you feel comfortable.

I have a student who used to complain about getting headaches, when he first started studying with me, about 40 minutes into the lesson.  Now he doesn't get them.  I think it was frustration and stress that would cause his headaches.  He is much more relaxed in class now and making progress, so maybe that's why he doesn't suffer from headaches like he used to.

I don't get headaches. Instead, my language exchange partners get them, when I butcher their language...lol!

Headaches are a sign that you need to relax.  There is no way you'll make progress.

I haven't tried aspirins for wine, but a long rest does the trick.

I think you are just putting unnecessary pressure on yourself :)

I measure progress in quite a simple way, I just look at how many books I have read, and how many TV series I have watched.

It can feel like you are not making progress at times, but that is exactly the process! You are making progress, its just its not as noticeable as when you first started learning, so keep at it! :)

I sometimes get tired when I am speaking in a foreign language, but that is completely normal, so I dont let it bother me. Whatever you do with the language, just make sure you enjoy it!
