How do you learn words? I am very concerned about learning words. I study on my own as I try to reach C2 level in english and take my certificate of proficiency in English in December. My question is how can I learn words and use them to my writing successfully.

1. Best method: Reading.
Read a lot, because you’ll understand words in context, and you’ll also pick useful up grammar. If reading is too difficulty, find some easier material.

2. Fool-proof method: Flashcards.
Combine flashcards with making up sentences on the fly and visualization — you’re a lot smarter than a parrot :)

3. Whimsical method: “It’s Greek to me.”
I was going to suggest studying a few dozen Ancient Greek roots used in English, since tens of thousands of advanced “English” vocabulary words are really from Greek and Latin, but I see you have that covered. For fun, you may want to look over a page of advanced English and try to identify all the Greek roots — you may be pleasantly surprised — or I may just be crazy. Either way, I’d be curious to know how it goes for you.

I think its important to learn words in a very natural way. I never try to learn any word by heart at all, I just try to read as many books as I can (that interest me), watch as much TV as possible, and then find an interesting penpal where you can discuss many topics, and try out new structures and phrases! With enough repetition in many different contexts, the words just stick by themselves, without the need to ram them into your head (which I find boring, and I actually dont think it works) :).

I dont use flashcards or do anything complicated. I just lie in bed and read a novel lol

But thats just my opinion, but I do think its very effective, and a really good way to just enjoy the language!

Elina- ANKI has a free desktop and web/mobile based program that is the best for learning vocabulary if you are going to try to learn words out of context. BUT, I suggest that is useless.  Read books, write, listen and speak is the best way to learn vocabulary so your brain meets words with context.  Good luck. -S

To expand your vocabulary you can try this method: read articles which fit your level in themes which you are interested in, then write down every unknown word you meet. Then translate those words and make your own sentences with them. It helps me at least. I also know the other way of building vocabulary: just open a dictionary and learn ten words beginning with "A" today, tomorrow ten words with "B" etc. When you have reached the last letter, go back to the beginning and learn the next ten words with "A". I don't know whether it works or not honestly, but seems to be an extraordinarily and interesting way. But I keep on being sure that reading is the best one, anyway. Hope these tips will be helpful!
