Is this a chinese joke?

而且,你还讲过一个故事:有三个人比赛吃辣的,一个是四川人,他说不怕辣,一个是湖北人,他说辣不怕,一个是湖南人,他说怕不辣。你说你是怕不辣的,今天怎么又说四川菜太辣?是不是晕船啊?

I come a cross this, but i didn't quite understand. Does the last person say he is scared of eating la? Pa4 bu la4

Thanks

Word order matters in Chinese, doesn't it? =)

怕不辣 means "is worried that it's not spicy." In this case, 怕 is a verb that applies to the subject of the sentence.

不怕辣 means "isn't afraid of spiciness." This one is probably the most straight forward: "negative fear spice."

辣不怕 means "can't become afraid after tasting spiciness." In this case, 辣 is the verb (meaning "to be affected by spiciness") that applies to the subject and 不怕 is the condition that results from that verb.

I hope this helped. Please let me know if it didn't.

哈哈,很多朋友喜欢问这个问题。中国的辣椒虽然不是最辣,但是应该是最丰富的一种调料了。远不止四川,湖南,湖北,还有重庆,陕西,贵州,江西,东北,新疆都有各种和辣椒组合的美味。

"So 辣不怕 means that eating la was a big deal for him and now he is not scared of anything. Or that the 3rd cannot eat spicy things very well?"

Almost. 辣不怕 means 辣 is not a big deal; hence why 不怕 (not afraid).
