Before finding a teacher here, did you already have some knowledge in the language(s) that you wish to learn?

Hi All!

I'm currently working on a research on second language learners on Italki. To those who are currently learning a language/languages on Italki, would you minding filling out the following questionnaire for me? Your valuable opinion matters!

Hi Fion Lo

Good survey. I've answered it from my perspective of being a language learner.

Question 9 could benefit from having a "Don't know" or "I like both equally" option.

Question 10 says do you prefer lessons on Italki or with a 'real' teacher. You should reword this, because there are hundreds of 'real' teachers on Italki. :-)

For functional language learners who need the language to sustain their specialty, learning a language is chiefly to enhance their specialty by learning that language, under this circumstance they have held some degree of knowledge in the target language before they are engaged in the study of the language then the answer is yes.

For romantic reason to learn  a language such as falling in love with someone who is speaking another language, it is very likely the learner have had little special knowledge in the language.  In this case, the answer would be no.

I had a basic knowledge in some languages and absolutely no prior knowledge in others.

Q4 should allow multiple answers, for people who learn more than one language. The way it is worded it forces me to be inaccurate.

By the way I do not really understand this expression 'second' language. Like you have one native language and max only one other language you can learn? What is the origin of this expression?

Actually when I started to learn English, German, French and Spanish in class I already knew something of those languages from sources like television. So I never entered the class fully blank.

When I started to learn Korean, I first did some selfstudy, because otherwise you pay a class or a teacher to learn you really basic things like how to say 'yes' and 'no' and 'thank you´.
