Present perfect describes an event that began in the past and continues into the present.
Past perfect describes an event that began in the past and ended in the past.
Both are structured similarly:
Present perfect uses "has" or "have" + past participle: "I have watched the movie," "He has not finished cleaning," "I have been to New York," "I've lived here for six months." These events/experiences began in the past, but their influences continue into the present. Or, it's a past event, with an unspecified time ("I've been to New York," "I've been to Italy twice.")
Past perfect uses "had" + past participle: "I had been to Japan twice by the time I was 10 years old," "When I woke up, my husband had already eaten breakfast." The event happened before a time in the past.
