Students, how do you feel about reading and listening exercises in the lesson?

Hi! 


Most students want to speak as much as possible in the lesson, given that's the only thing that they can't do on their own. However, most approaches taken by textbooks contain some reading and listening tasks that contextualize or complement the linguistic goal of the unit. Sending those exercises to do at home may not be the solution either, given that they make sense in context and as part of a whole unit. So, I want to know if you, as a student, consider doing short reading and listening activities a waste of time in the lesson.

Hi, Alejandro! As a student, I don't think it is a waste of time to do reading exercises during a lesson. In all of my language studies, I have always found it helpful to do "group" readings as a way of being able to have real time feedback on what you are reading. Often, I find that one of the things that keeps me from progressing as much as I would like while learning a language is being unsure if my self-practice reading is correct. I think doing this during lessons is a great way for any student to get immediate feedback from their tutor and will help them build confidence.

I agree with Guyomar in that my main job as a teacher is to provide Comprehensible Input.

I never ask my students to do reading/listening exercises during the class, but I ask them to do them between classes. That's why I create audios with perfectly synchronized subtitles and post them to YouTube. However, I do have a student who is very keen on improving her pronunciation and prosody, so I do listen to hear read during class and provide feedback.

I don't find reading and/or listening exercises a waste, especially listening. To me, listening comprehension is the skill I need the most work in so I like having the skill exercised with someone who can give me instant feedback.

For me, I do generally feel reading and listening exercises are a waste of my time during a lesson, because I do so much of that on my own.  The reading or listening exercises chosen by teachers also often bore me.
