Hi Matt,

The character 之 comes from Classical Chinese. It can mean a bunch of things, but the most common meanings are:

1) As a substitute for he, she or it.

以刀劈狼首，數刀斃之 - to cut the wolf's head of with a knife, a few blows killed the wolf. Here 之 replaces 狼首.

2) Meaning 的. This is often found in modern day Chinese idioms, or when you want to make something sound more literary.

父母之命，媒妁之言 - When in ancient China couples had to have their parents permission to get married, they'd need the 言 (speech/words) of a 媒妁.

緩兵之計 - Delaying tactics so that you can buy time to think about how to solve the root of the problem

赤子之心 - A pure heart like a baby

山河之壯美 - The magnificence of the river in the mountains

戰鬥之慘烈 - The tragedy of war

影響之深遠 - The profoundness of the influence

3) In Classical Chinese it can sometimes mean towards, to arrive or to go

吾慾之南海，何如？I want to go to the southern ocean, how do I get there?

4) In Classical Chinese it can also sometimes mean this or this one

以君之力，曾不能損父之丘 (the second one) Using only your own strength, you won't even be able to get rid of the mountain at Kuifu, so how do you think you'll be able to move the mountains at Taihang and Wangwu? Here 父之丘 means 魁父這座山丘

5) It can mean me or I sometimes

不知將軍寬之至此也 (I) didn't know that the commander would tolerate me to such an extent!

6) It can sometimes mean nothing and is just used to adjust the rhythm of the sentence.

頃之，煙炎張天 Soon, dense smoke and flames filled the sky. Here 頃 means 頃刻, and 之 is just used to make the first part of the sentence two syllables long, it doesn't mean anything.

That's most of what you need to know. As William mentioned, it also comes up in words like 之所以, 之前 etc. In such words, it usually means 的.
