I had to learn English by myself and something I found very useful was reading and listening to music. I used to write down the words of the songs I liked and with the help of a giant dictionary I would make the translation word by word. Eventually it came naturally to me. I knew more words and it was easier to fill in the gaps when I wanted to communicate. I did catch a lot of American expressions at first though.
