What are your greatest obstacles or difficulties in learning Afrikaans?

I have been teaching Afrikaans for more than 20 years, and in all this time I have found students from a variety of different countries across the globe, who learn the Afrikaans language at different paces to each other.

What are the difficulties that you think, are specific to your native language and world region, that you struggle with whilst learning to speak fluent Afrikaans?

it is an easy question:) Lack of people to speak it with:)

I tryed learning Afrikaans a decade ago. I know it mostly from songs (particualrly Koos Kombuis). I like the langauge. Also it is very easy, I think Afrikaans is great for learners' self-esteem because you can achieve a lot within two weeks:)

But whom can I speak it with? When I have an Afrikaans speaking freind I will renew my studies absolutely.

For me, the hardest things are practical: finding teachers, finding partners and finding books. There is material out there, but compared to European languages they are few and far between. Also, there is no examination-centre for taking recognised Afrikaans exams.

I am fine with the vocab but when speaking with natives I get my grammar all mixed up:/

For me, the biggest issue is finding people to practice my speaking and listening skills.

It depends how persons learn their language, for example, There are many of people learn their native language by parents, and these parents teach children the language by speaking only which means these children do not learn the writing, reading and perfect words. In the result, these people when join to the education world such as, school, they will face difficultes to learn the correct language.
