Why? Oh, why? Just why there is no chat system but only this awkward terribly inconvenient discussion board? I am dreaming about a sort of spring where tired travellers (like me) could have some rest.

There's no advertising on italki. They make their money by brokering lessons with teachers and community tutors. The discussion board I guess is a perk. But if they made it too appealing, the majority of users would continue just using that. Where's their motivation for improving the free features?

@Eddy  Not at all! I have connected with two excellent Italian teachers through italki. What's more, I have had rewarding language exchange sessions with several Italian-speaking learners of English, and some of them I continue to chat with now and then. I've also learned things from reading the discussion and notebook entries of other learners.

I agree with @Irina that the website (I don't use the app) could be improved. My top wish would be to find someway to direct people to the appropriate path for simple questions, for discussions (that aren't simple questions), for notebook entries to be corrected, and most important, for a way to find language partners.  I simply don't expect the italki team to make this into my dream application.

On second thought -- maybe I missed some humor in your comment! It's hard to know when to take people literally, especially when you don't know them.

As Sheila mentioned, italki is basically a marketplace for students to find teachers.  Students pay for lessons and italki takes a commission.

@Sheila, yes indeed, I was basically fooling around, and it ended up looking less goofy than I intended it to be.

Obviously, had it been a voice message, my intonation would have made it all nice and plain.

Kinda shows that improvement would be possible here, doesn't it? Imagine a vocal chatroom, what a blast that would be phonetically speaking!

Hey Sheila, sounds like you hate this place. You should write the italki team a memo! In case you need to translate it into Chinese, look up some Chinese teachers online. They're all right here for you to order :)
