WHY LEARNING JAPANESE IS DIFFICULT FOR YOU??
Hello everyone! I'm a Japanese community tutor Yuya. I've been teaching Japanese with italki for about 1 month, and I want to know some of the major reasons why learning Japanese is difficult. Or I want to know what kind of things you struggled with when you learn Japanese. Also, please tell me what worked and did not work for you when you learn Japanese. i.e.) I used Japanese anime when I learn Japanese conversation, and it really worked.

For me the biggest problem is the vocabulary I had to learn (mainly for kanji tests). On the one hand I never heard or read those words in context, we just got a (huge) list we had to know for the tests. There were so many words that I never had time to look for the context in which they are used and a lot of them only started to come up after I started to learn academic Japanese. The other problem is that our textbook always skipped the words that you need for everyday conversations the most (like おすすめ). I literally know double the amount of Japanese vocabulary compared to English vocabulary, but it’s much harder for me to express myself in Japanese. Also when talking in Japanese it happens often that my conversation partner uses a word I have never heard before (that barely ever happens to me with English).
Also some Japanese teachers seem to think that giving your students a set of phrases (which they are of course supposed to learn by heart) or having them read a dialogue out loud replaces any other conversation exercise. Nevertheless I've never met a person which became fluent in any language which this method.
Wow, that must have sound very negative. Sorry about that. Something which I also struggle with (and that my Japanese teachers are really good at teaching) is the pitch accent in Japanese. For examples when I say 橋 and 箸 or ぶどう and 武道 it's sometime very hard to hear the difference.
I absolutely love Kanji and don't have any problem with them even though I can understand that some people might. The same goes for same Japanese ways of saying stuff, which often translates to the opposite meaning like 「日本人はいないか?」= "Are there any Japanese?"

I'm Chinese, so Kanji is of little problem to me. Conjugations, however, is another story. The German language also has a crap ton of conjugations but somehow I managed it. But I just cannot get the hang of those of the Japanese language.
I do believe you need to listen more, read more and speak more when learning Japanese and ask fewer why's. You shouldn't learn too much Grammar when you are a beginner. Grammar will make sense later. Sadly, my textbook focuses 90% on Grammar (as is with most language textbooks in China), so I gave up after about 200 hours of Japanese learning. Now I have forgotten nearly all, but I do plan to pick it up with Duolingo soon.

Saraさん、おはよう!そして返信ありがとう😊
Thank you for letting me know, Sara! I understand how difficult to learn kanji is... Even me I still have many Kanji letters which I don’t remember yet. 😅
I’ll think about how people can improve their reading and writing! Again, I really appreciate your help!
ありがとう!

おはよう I think for me it's more difficult writing and reading than speaking or listening. I think it's because there are so many kanji with different meaning and i don't understand them very well at the moment, i hope i can improve my skills soon. For the pronunciation and listening, I listen some Japanese interviews or Japanese documentary on youtube. I also interested to Japanese culture so i listen a lot of video in italian or english about it.
さようなら
