“If you don’t have enemies, you don’t have character.”
I recently read a quote by Paul Newman which says,
“If you don’t have enemies, you don’t have character.”
I wonder if you agree with this statement or not?

To an extent. On the other hand, it’s possible to disagree without being disagreeable, and it’s even possible to be disagreeable without really disagreeing. Having a lot of enemies may mean you have character, or it may just mean you’re a jerk :) In other words, if one desires continued personal growth, it might be best to find other criteria for defining one’s character. And keep an open mind as to why one has enemies. Having character means you treat other people right. Actually, people with character tend to attract lots of friends — even people who disagree with them.

I like more this one by Winston Churchill:
" You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life. "

Volt Age, something close to it is found in a journal entry of Victor Hugo written in 1845:
”You have enemies? Why, it is the story of every man who has done a great deed or created a new idea.”

Thank you for your opinion Phil.
“.... or it may just mean you’re a jerk” made me smile:)))

I agree, but think "enemies" is a bit of a strong word. Everyone has opinions and beliefs though, and not everyone can agree with one another. Having people disagree with you proves you have an opinion. If you never disagree with anyone it means you have no strong feelings to agree or disagree about. Having strong feelings builds character, otherwise what are you living for?
