Opinion: „How to acquire any language NOT learn it“
Hi, I recently watched this video on the Aquisition method, for a professor training himself to speak Arabic over the course of a year. The video is linked below;

I’m curious to hear the thoughts of students and tutors alike about the ‘rules’ of the approach and the content of the video linked, in general.

Have you ever taught/been taught with the acquisition method (whether you called it that or something else)? How did you go about it? What materials did you use? Was it successful, in your opinion? Were there drawbacks you experienced?

I’d love to hear any other thoughts you have too about the video or the method.

(I’m posting that this is related to Portuguese learning because that is the one I’m currently learning, but I’m open to opinions from teachers/learners of all the languages)

Many thanks!

Hey Sareg0,
I have seen this video before, I love the idea and totally agree with everything in it.
One part I believe people ignore is the hours you need to spend to acquire a language.
Minimum 500 hours for a language? 500 hours of ACTIVE LISTENING AND SPEAKING?
YES, That`s right! I wish all the learners can see this and just understand it.
There are so many students out there expecting results and expecting a great feedback after 2 hours.
Also there are so many popular articles and apps that promise you learning the language in just 3 to 6 months.
Yes, it`s possible, but they never mention the 500 hours you need to put in!
Acquiring a language isn`t hard for the student, I think it`s hard for a teacher to teach it, because it`s the opposite of what the traditional schools do - start with grammar. It`s like spending time with a baby for so many hours ( not everyone can do that). It can also be frustrating for the student, I acquired my Spanish, but honestly the first 8 months I could not make a proper sentence, after that period all of a sudden I could have a conversation without a problem.

Nine months is actually a lot less time than you’d have to invest using the traditional “textbook” method to reach this level of proficiency.

This method works and has a lot of research backing it up. It was developed by the linguist Stephen Krashen and the education theorist Tracy Terrell. Krashen is a professor at the University of Southern California, which is considered to be one of the best universities in the world for research on second-language acquisition. Steve Kaufmann (who’s another linguist who supports this method) talks about it a lot on his Youtube channel. Kaufmann founded a language-learning system/community that uses this method. This is a video of Kaufmann and Krashen talking about this method: https://youtu.be/4lyNDbgqsB0;

It's not how languages are taught in classes anywhere, but as far as I am concerned it's the only method I ever use or have used. Structured lessons such as those used in classes bore me. And yes, I've seen this video and other related videos as well. If you like the approach, give it a go. I will just add that it takes time but has permanent gains.

I saw this video before and I came here thinking ,I can find birtish speaker and reach the same level of that guy.I am a native Arabic speaker and his level is very impressive but I think he only learned to speak (no writing) and he went and lived in Egypt and spend hours of speaking using stories and pictures and it took 9 months.so alot of investment.Are you ready for that?
