What is typical American to you?

I think this question is on the brink of being insulting. America is a plcae, just like any other country, filled with diversity, culture, and freedoms. Generalizing people from any country is not a wise thing to do. This close-minded question will only lead you to close-minded answers.

*(My comment may be harsh, but I want to defend against generalizing anyone, not just Americans.)*

I'll disagree with some of the other posters. I don't see anything close to offensive in your question. It's a purely cultural interest question.

There is a lot in the US that is "typical." In fact, I think that of all of the countries in the world, the US is probably one of the more homogeneous countries out there. Sure, on the outside it appears that it's a country of diversity, freedoms, tolerance for others BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, but it's not. It's more of a step in line and go with the flow kind of country. God forbid your are an individual.
Most Americans live within 3 miles of a McDonalds. The food will taste the same in all of them. In fact, McDonald's uses some chemicals to ensure that they all taste the same (chemicals forbidden in other countries). Are the eggs in your country always the same shade of yellow? And HUGE numbers of Americans eat at McDonalds.
You can find the same "strip malls" (<--good phrase to know) from Miami to California: Target, PetSmart, Subway, RiteAid all bunched up together. Ick...no unique shops. IF you want a unique product, go online or try to find a local craftsperson.

You realize that the USA is just about the size of the entirety of Europe, right? And the cultural/geographical differences between our states/regions is just as stark. Asking about the "typical American", even to a native, would be like asking a Spaniard about what he thought the typical European is like. He has only the vaguest hint of the cultures of Germany or Poland or Norway or Slovenia or Ireland, just like someone like myself has only the vaguest hint of understanding about Texans or Idahoans or Alaskans or Californians.

And even if you break it down to states, or even just cities, there's an unbelievable amount of variation. I can't think of a single "American" trait that doesn't immediately make me think of ten personal counterexamples.

For me, there are no statements that could accurately answer that question. People here are as different from each other as people in any place. The only thing *possibly* I could say is "english speaking", but this is not reflective of everyone here.
