Cantonese is the language of trading Chinese. I believe that it has 6 tones compared to the standard 4 of Mandarin. I once had a discussion about bilingualism in the Chinese population (Cantonese and Mandarin) with a Chinese linguist (who I had thought was a native English speaker), her conclusion was that Cantonese speaking Chinese were the ones most likely to pick up Mandarin, whereas few Mandarin speakers managed to become fluent in Cantonese. Do I think that Cantonese is funny ? No, I don't.
我有点羡慕说粤语的人，因为他们很多也可以说普通话。但是对于我们北方人来说，学粤语太难了。我看英语节目能懂个大概，看香港节目没有字幕是完全看不懂。当然了，学习英语资源很多，学粤语资源很少（对于大陆北方人）。
