Used of learning new languages

Hello everyone,

I am learning Portuguese and Japanese, a lot better at Portuguese currently than I am in Japanese.  For those who do know more than one languages, have you found it useful to know multiple languages?  And in what ways have they been useful?

Thanks!

That's true, learning languages also takes using them to remember them.  I feel I can use Portuguese fairly often, but Japanese, I guess I would have to meet people online who can speak it in order to practice it.

I learned English, German, Turkish and Spanish.

I can say that if you learned 1 language it really helps you learn another one...

But there s no point to learn several languages if you re not going to use them. I lost German and Turkish completely and as I don`t practise Spanish I am bad at it now((:

But am really trying to keep studying it.

Yeah for sure!  I do notice that knowing Spanish, French, and Chinese seem to be particularly useful besides English.  I guess it also depends what country you actually live in too of course.  I live in Canada and some jobs hire bilingual in French, but I have no motivation to learn the language.

Oops, I am sorry for mistake. I know Russian and Georgian. Georgian is used only in my country. I need it to be employed in state institutes, because Georgian is official language here. However, only 5 million people speak Georgian. There are not even similar languages in the world. I need Russian for more information. I can't even imagine my life without it. However, Russian isn't enough for promotion. That's why I am studying English now.

However, I understand you. Learning language is quite grueling work and motivation is pretty important thing. It's not easy to learn language without strong motivation only for travelling and intertaining.

I wonder why English, a language that hasn't been around as long as other languages, became the most useful language in the world.  I personally am learning Portuguese because a lot of my family speaks Portuguese.  I'm learning Japanese because I am fascinated by their culture and hope to live there teaching for a year or two.
