In science, it means a paper that is written "from the literature;" that is to say, by reading and summarizing papers that have already been written; as opposed to a paper presenting original research.

When you do a literature survey for scientific subject, you illustrate and show all the relevant theories and similar findings( projects, experiments..). For non-scientific subjects, you illustrate and explore philosofies and give a detailed introduction for the research or the paper you're about to explain...   

....but what about a  Literature Survey that is beyond the context of Science?
