Look over, to examine, to evaluate, to analyze, to peruse....What are the differences?
If I have to check carefully an item to give a response to a customer from whom I received a complaint, which one is the most appropriave verb that I should use?
Examine is the best choice. "I have examined the item."
Look over means the same thing as examine, but it suggests a casual, quick, informal look, while examine suggests a careful, thorough inspection.
Evaluate means to make a judgement. "We have examined the chocolate you returned and confirmed the presence of the white bloom you mentioned. Our evaluation is that this bloom is merely cosmetic and does not affect the flavor of the chocolate in any way."
Analyze means to understand the nature and relationship of the parts of something. "Furthermore, our analysis is that this spot was caused by improper storage of the chocolate at your facility..."
Peruse means to read through something quickly and casually. "Thank you for your 286-page complaint. At this time I have not had a chance to peruse it, but I understand why you are concerned. Please be assured it will receive our full attention, but I am deferring a detailed reply until our legal team has had a chance to analyze it."
