You are right, it is confusing. The following forms are correct, just keep in mind the meanings may vary.
 
Noun phrases: (an) open mind, (a) closed mind.
 
Adjective phrases: closed minded, open minded, absent minded.
 
Verb phrases: trust in him, trust him, trust in me, trust me.
 
Note that the final "d" in "closed," and the final "t" in "trust" and "absent" may not be pronounced very clearly in conversation.
