Wa 3leikum assalam! My studing of arabic started with love to calligraphy...It depends on what you are interested in. In theory or practise. I had an introduction course of arabic calligraphy. It requires a lot of patience and imho peace with yourself). A lot of thoughts come to your mind while you are writing one letter 100 times or >. We didn't have special tools for drawing just pencil. But we tried to gain perfect form of some letters such as alif ba ta tha ha kha...Every letter has own specific size measured by point. Letter alif can have length from 3 till 12 points depending on style and handwriting of calligrapher. Width of alif equal to one point. In our case teacher taught us alif with 7 points. It is also important comply with an angle of writing. Everything should have right proportions. Important characteristics of style are direction (angle of inclination) and interval, twists and verticals, articulation of words, vowels and points. Although my course was interrupted and finished due to some administrative reasons of school. I clearly know that I barely touched this beautiful art. As you may know there are 6 styles in arabic calligraphy. My favorite style is Naskh and Thuluth. I think it is well worth trying.
