ielts task 2 In many schools and universities, girls tend to choose arts subjects (eg. languages) and boys choose science subjects (eg. Physics). What do you think are the reasons? Do you think that this tendency should be changed? It is clear that in secondary educational institutes, girls tend to choose arts subjects whereas boys choose science subjects This essay intents to look into the reasons of this phenomenon. I believe that this tendency should be changes for two main reasons. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is that the influence of traditional culture and preconception. This makes people have a stereotype that boys are likely to be more competitive and chose more challenging and physically demanding courses like science and engineering whereases girls are likely to be more sensitive and study arts subjects like languages. However, some studies show it is not true that boys are good at science subjects and girls are good at art subjects. As one can see that, there are many good women scientists and good men artists in the world. To change this trend, it is necessary to get a proper education for sexual equality from when they are young at home and school. It prevents people form having any gender stereotypes. In another reason, social structures or employment markets still have a huge decision power for choosing majors for girls and boys. In science and engineering fields, there are still a lot of demands for men job seekers. Even though obtaining science degrees guarantees better job opportunities, girls still have trouble with getting a job in these fields, because employment markets do not want to hire more girls than boys. Studies from MIT shows more than 70% employees in science fields are men. Therefore, it is needed to establish laws about employment without sexual discrimination. For example, in Canada, it is legally banded to indicate what gender employees prefer when they find job seekers. In conclusion, gender stereotypes are still influencing the choice of study and career. I believe that this phenomenon should be changed. Every student should opt for their subject following their interests and talents regardless of their gender so there will be more passion professionals in both art and science.
