How often is there a moon so bright?

I lift my cup towards the heaven blue.
Know not one day in the celestial palace,

Is what year of tonight? 1
I want to ride on the wind for my return,

And yet I am afraid in those tall jade towers.
I can bear no more of the cold.
In dance, moonlight and I,

Far better than life in Heaven!
Turning cinnabar red pavilions,

Lowering the exqusite carved windows,

Moonlight shafting through to see no sleepy head.
Ought not regrets that there be,

That why the moon is always full during partings?
There will always be joy and there will always be sorrow,

Just as the moon waxes and wanes.
These sort of things cannot be helped.
Long we hope to be on this earth,

Even though a thousand miles apart, still we can enjoy this same moonlight.

1.  Chinese believe that a day in heaven may be equivalent to 3 years on earth.  However different sources state different time equivalents.

----------------------

Old granny bent down to pick things that were strewn on the floor.

Heaving away, she finally had to sit down on a chair with some backing.

For your reference.

I have run into two different translations of this famous Ci.

The first one was translated by Lin Yutang. He wrote a book for Su Tungpo entitled The Gay Genius: The Life and Times of Su Tungpo. It was written in English, and later translated by someone else into Chinese. It's Chinese version is very popular.

How rare the moon, so round and clear!
With cup in hand, I ask of the blue sky,
"I do not know in the celestial sphere
What name this festive night goes by?"
I want to fly home, riding the air,
But fear the ethereal cold up there,
The jade and crystal mansions are so high!
Dancing to my shadow,
I feel no longer the mortal tie.
She rounds the vermilion tower,
Stoops to silk-pad doors,
Shines on those who sleepless lie.
Why does she, bearing us no grudge,
Shine upon our parting, reunion deny?
But rare is perfect happiness—
The moon does wax, the moon does wane,
And so men meet and say goodbye.
I only pray our life be long,
And our souls together heavenward fly!

Another translation is by Xu Yuanchong (許淵冲), who has been hailed as "詩譯英法唯一人".

How long will the full moon appear?
Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky.
I do not know what time of the year
’Twould be tonight in the palace on high.
Riding the wind, there I would fly,
Yet I’m afraid the crystalline palace would be
Too high and cold for me.
I rise and dance, with my shadow I play.
On high as on earth, would it be as gay?
The moon goes round the mansions red
Through gauze-draped window soft to shed
Her light upon the sleepless bed.
Why then when people part, is the oft full and bright?
Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again;
The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
So let us wish that man
Will live long as he can!
Though miles apart, we’ll share the beauty she displays.

Personally I prefer Lin's translation because he managed to create a new rhythem in the target language, which makes up for some differences in meaning with the original.
