why my English is still weak after 14 years learning? I am a graduate student in a science and engineering university. It is about 14 years since I began to learn English in middle school, but I still can not use it smoothly, especially in spoken and written English. Recently, I have written a research paper. Fist I wrote in Chinese and then translate the paper into English. This process makes me feel sad. After so many years study, I still can’t write in English directly. More sadly, I don’t know how to how to improve it effectively, and all the work I have done seem to be vain.

Why my English is still weak after 14 years of learning?

I am a graduate student in a science and engineering university. It is about 14 years since I began to learn English in middle school. but However, I still cannot speak or write fluently. can not use it smoothly, especially in spoken and written English. Recently, I have had written a research paper. First I wrote it in Chinese and then translate the paper it into English. This process makes me feel sad. because after so many years of study, I still can’t cannot write in English directly. More sadly, Even more so, I don’t know how to how to improve it in an effective mannerly, and All the work I have done did seem to be in vain.

Don't be too hard on yourself.  Your English is not bad at all considering the non-English environment you are in.  You have grasped some of the finer details of the language but still have far to go.  Just continue, read and write more.  Learning a language, even your own is a continual process.  Also your thought process is very English like.

@Leah: This is an example why writing proper English or in any language for the matter is so very important.  Writing slang or informally and bad habits will form.  Even though people may understand you, you will never be taken seriously at all and go far in life.  Jacob seems to understand.  He will do great in the future if he persists in his goal.

Hello Jacob Your English is good. You have very high expectations of yourself. Feeling bad about yourself will slow down your progress. It takes about 10,000 hours to be expert at anything. that includes languages. Mistakes are part of the process. Why not get your research paper proof read and corrected by a native English speaker. And just stop worrying about it? Instead of blaming yourself, why not try to find lots of easy interesting English to read and listen to? Researchers have found that your writing ability in a language depends on how much you read. If you read lots of easy enjoyable English your writing will improve like magic. I guarantee it. You don't even need to practise writing. ny well written English that's fun and interesting for you is suitable. But science / engineering books and magazines will be of most help for your research papers. Do you like reading novels and stories? If so I recommend you find stories to read - eg graded readers for English language learners or teen fiction - eg vampire books etc... if you can understand about 95% of the words on a page then you can guess correctly the new words without needing a dictionary. It's FUN, it's EASY, it's CHEAP. This method is proven by a US researcher called professor Stephen Krashen. Good luck.
