Greetings in Italian Hi everyone! Tonight we will see how to greet someone in Italian (Sorry if my English is not very good!). In Italy we have a lot of greetings, because we use different greetings depending on the person we are talking to. These are the first words that you have to learn. So, we use a lot of idioms, such as: Ciao = it means Hello, Hi. It's quite informal, so you can use it with friends, family or with people who are younger than you or people with the same age. We can even say: Ehi or Ehilà, but it's very very informal. For older people, we use Salve which is formal. Then, we have three forms that can be used only in a particular period of time. Buongiorno = it means Good Morning // Buon Pomeriggio = Good Afternoon // Buona Sera = Good Evening // Buona Notte = Good Night. Buona notte can also be used when someone goes to sleep and you say bye bye to him/her. For example: A is going to sleep, so B says: Ehi A, Buona notte! Ci vediamo domani, ciao! = Ehi A, Good Night. See you tomorrow, bye!. Instead, when you go away and you have to say bye bye to someone, you can say: Ciao! = Bye bye or Arrivederci! = Goodbye (this one is formal, you use it with older people or with someone that you don't know very well, but you can use it even if you are going away for a brief period of time and you know that another day you will see that person). If you have to go away for a long period of time, and you don't know if you are going to come back in that place or if you will see again the person you are talking to, you say: Addio = Farewell/ Goodbye. After saying a greeting, you say: How are you? In Italian we say: Come stai? (informal) // Come va?, Come sta? (formal). Well, I think that for tonight is enough!
