Navidad [<em>Christmas</em>] is here, and this is a traditionally important holiday in Spain. I know in English it’s Christmas, and each country has a different way of celebrating this holiday. This is how we celebrate it in Spain:
We begin to feel the "Christmas Spirit" before December 25th. We decorate the streets with lights, pine and fir trees,and other traditional Christmas decorations.
La Navidad en España [<em>Christmas in Spain</em>] commences today, December 22nd, with a lottery called “El Gordo” [<em>Fat Lottery</em>]. This is the biggest lottery in Spain, and it has been celebrated every December 22nd since 1812. But don’t worry, I’m not rich.
The night of December 24th is known as “Nochebuena” [<em>Christmas Eve</em>]. Our Roman Catholic tradition is to go to Mass at midnight to celebrate “La Misa del Gallo" [<em>Midnight Mass</em>]. After mass, our families enjoy a special meal.
The next day is Navidad, and families meet again for another traditional meal.
During La Navidad, Spanish families decorate their homes with a “Belén” [<em>Nativity Scene</em>]. This is a display with small figures made of wood or plastic and it represents the traditional "Nativity Scene." Homes are decorated inside with a tree [<em>Christmas Tree</em>] complete with lights, and other traditional Christmas decorations.
Traditional activities are losing popularity. When I was a boy, I often went out to sing “Villancicos” [<em>Carols</em>], but now there aren’t many children who sing our traditional songs anymore. The Villancicos are songs about La Navidad that children sing in the street and at home for everyone. The lunch tradition of Noche Buena used to be pavo [<em>roasted turkey</em>] but now this depends upon the different regions of Spain.
There are a lots of traditional pastries made specifically for Navidad, and they are: turrones [<em>Nougat</em>]; mantecados [<em>Shortcake</em>]; mazapanes [<em>Marzipan</em>]; polvorones [<em>shortbread</em>], y el roscón de reyes [<em>King's Ring</em>].

After mass, families meet to have a special meal. The next day, the 25th of December is “Navidad” and families also meet to have a special lunch on this day.
