Learning languages in Brazil

Since I was a young teenager I have been interested in learning new languages. English was the first one. I had it as a school subject/subject at school for many years, but this was not so helpful/useful, given the poor quality of the courses in most part of Brazilian schools. Like many students from my country, I had to enroll myself in expensive courses provided by private language institutions of languages. Yet, I think it was not enough. For me it is still not possible to use it in a professional context (in my case, Law) and it is not easy (for me) to read a novel either. I often blame myself for not knowing more. In addition, I believe that the Brazilian educational system is deplorable and really old-fashioned. Even though we are surrounded by Spanish-speaking countries, the teaching of this language was not mandatory till few years ago. I envy the European system, in wich pupils have the chance of learning several languages, (each taught) in a very satisfactory way. Another thing I have to lament is the lack of material for learning languages in my country. One may find reasonable things effective materials only for as regard to English . On the other hand, it’s not possible to find good dictionaries, grammars or courses written in Portuguese to learn other languages. Hopefully things will change soon/in the near future so that language learners like me may expand their horizons in Brazil.
