*1: 動物 actually includes all kinds of creatures, but often give off the image of mammals. Here in this sentence, 生き物 sounds right.
*2: 家庭 is a word for a human household in general. コミュニティ /community/ fits well here. Or if you really want to emphacize they are family, you may like the word 家族.
