Average distance in miles travelled per person per year, by mode of travel The table demonstrates the data of average distance per person per year regarding different mode of travel in 1985 and 2000. From the table we know that some kinds of travel were warmly welcomed in England. Car captured the first place among all kinds of travel in the 10 years, with its average distance travelled by person increasing considerably from 3199 miles in1985 to 4806 miles in 2000. Long distance bus and taxi also gained popularity in this period, so the average distance of them almost doubled and tripled respectively. Besides, train and some other transport had a little amount of increase in this decade. However, some modes seemed are less welcomed by British people in those ten years. The average distance per person for local bus dropped rapidly from 429 miles to 274 miles while the figures for walking and bicycle declined at a slow rate from 255 miles and 51 miles in 1985 to 237 miles and 41 miles, differently. In conclusion, the number of average distance in miles rose from 4740 to 6475, with the increase of long distance travel modes accounting for almost all of that increase.
