Beginning learners only need to learn the denotations of words.  Agree or disagree?

I can't agree completely with this statement.
Personally, I believe that a learner should also pay attention also to the usage of the word. For this reason, it is better for beginners to remember not just a single word, but a whole phrase or a collocation. Thus, he can understand where and how to use the word in the a context.
