Lucy broke her arm last week. It happened when she was painting her room. She fell ofa ladder.  [1]
The train arrived, [2] and Paula got off. Two friends of hers, John and Rachel, were waiting to meet her.
Yesterday Sue was walking along the road when she met James. He was going to the station to catch a train, [2] and he was carrying a bag. They stopped to talk for a few minutes.

 

[1] Here's a correct but less common variant:  She fell off of a ladder.   Use the article "the" only if the ladder has previously been mentioned.

[2]  When two clauses are joined by a coordinating conjunction [and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so], use a comma before the coordinating conjunction.
