New words, ask for your opinion These words are new for me, but I don't realy understand what they mean and where I could use them. You will help me so much if write your explanation and examples. So.. depression - an area of low pressure that causes cold, wind and rain gale force - describes very strong wind that can cause damage hammer down - describes very heavy rain batten down the hatches - prepare for a difficult or dangerous situation weather the storm - survive a difficult situation Words are already with explanations but it don't help me at all.

I hope it doesn't confuse, but "depression" also refers to a medical condition when we are feeling unappreciated and useless. e.g. "I get depressed when everything seems to be going wrong and I can't see a way out." This tends to reoccur, which we call "bouts of depression." "hammer down" can also refer to work done by carpenters and builders - "The next job is to hammer down the felt on the flat roof." Even "weather the storm" has been used to describe a period of time when sales have slumped, but the demand is expected to increase again.

So..
depression - an area of low pressure that causes cold, wind and rain
gale force - describes a very strong wind that can cause damage
hammer down - describes very heavy rain
batten down the hatches - to prepare for a difficult or dangerous situation or weather
weather the storm - survive a difficult situation


Words are already with explanations but it doesn't help me at all.

 

<em>The weatherman signaled a depression 100 kilometers away from my city that would bring bad weather. </em>

 

<em>The gale force wind destroyed the sign on front of my house. </em>

 

<em>The rain hammered down on the car, making it impossible to have a conversation. </em>

 

<em>The family battened down the hatches of their home to prepare for the storm. </em>

 

<em>They had to weather the storm for 24 hours before they were able to go outside again. </em>
