四合院 Courtyard of Four Harmonies

党家村的四合院，一般占地四分左右，呈长方形，The courtyard houses (known as the Four Harmonies) are shaped as a rectangle 四周由厅房、厢房、门房四房屋围成，with the living quarters and side rooms surrounding.  青砖铺墁，azure colored bricks are used as plastering material. 院中央设天心石。There is no circular stone slad in the middle of the courtyard.  以厅房为首，The living quarters represent the human head, 门房为足，the gatehouse as the foot 左右厢房为双臂，the left and right side quarters as shoulders.  拟人化，有寓意。The human representation has moral significance. 又以厅为主，The main quarters is considereed as the host, 门房宾，and the gatehouse as guest 取贵主配贤宾之意。to signify the relationship [between host and guest]
房屋建造为砖木结构，The rooms are constructed from brick and wood 青砖墙，azure colored bricks are for the walls, 灰瓦顶，gray tiles for the roof. 在建筑装饰上，木、砖、石三雕俱全，Decorations may be carved on these materials 其艺术之作，举目可见。so that one's head lifted and these can be seen easily. 一般为二层楼房。Generally these homes are two storied. 房屋间数均取单数——按八卦阴阳之说，Rooms are odd numbered -- this is according to the Ying Yang principles, 单数为阳，双数为阴。Odd numbers being Yang and even ones are Ying.

This is an almost literal translation of terms.  For example, in interpretive translation, 四合院 should be translated as "traditional Chinese homes/houses known as Courtyard of Four Harmonies" so that those does not know Chinese culture may understand the text better.

青 can mean green, black and blue.  In this context, it is the light blue color to represent water.

天心石 is another technial term which has no English equivalent.  It is a circular stone slab that when one stands in the center of it, can hear the sounds of the surrounding that makes the listener feel as if he is intune with nature/heaven.
