Grandfather. Part 2

You can read beginning of the story here https://www.italki.com/notebooks/886911

It was just another day in the beginning of the war. My granddad, with a bunch of the other soldiers, (1) had a meal gathering gathered around the field canteens. As usual, they ate shitty-tastedtasting porridge. My grandfather quite loudly said how gruesome (2) the taste was. It happened that the political commissar* heard that overheard, and that night he called my grandfather in.

* Political commissar. In the military, a political commissar or political officer (or politruk, from Russian: политический руководитель, "political leader"), is a supervisory officer responsible for the political education (ideology) and organization of the unit they are assigned to, and intended to ensure civilian control of the military.

To be finished

(1) you've taken a break from the sentence to add an aside so you would add bracketing commas.  Alternatively you could drop the commas and say "My grandad and a bunch of the other soldiers had a meal gathered around the field canteens"

(2) technically a correct adjective but this would sound out of place here.  Gruesome is generally too strong to apply even to the worst-tasting food.  It's more commonly associate with things that are morbid, horrifying or violent.
