Why airplane windows are oval? There are a lot of people who board whishing having a seat next to a window, to allow them to stare at night lights of a city or just to admire the snow-covered peaks of a mountain. But there are only a few who know why airplane windows have a oval shape. The selection of a oval shape for a airplane window is not a frivolous design selection. What seems to be a ornamental design is a consequence of airplane design evolution. The oval windows are an engineering innovation which save lives. If the airplane windows were rectangular as our house windows, the airplane would have been disintegrated in the air. To allow planes to flight to high altitude, airlines had to make changes in the design. The rectangular o square windows are problematic in hight altitude flights, due to the slight difference between the atmospheric and inside cabin pressure. This makes that windows frames are subject to a high pressure. This tension is bigger in pointed squares. Nevertheless this tension fluids smoothly over a circular or oval shape

Why Are Airplane Windows are Oval?

There are a lot of people who board an airplane, wishing to have a window seat next to a window, to which allows them to ^ stare marvel at night lights of a city or just to admire the snow-covered peaks of a mountain. But However, there are only a few who know why airplane windows have an oval shape.
The selection of an oval shape for airplane windows is not a frivolous one design selection. What seems to be an ornamental design is a consequence of an evolution in airplane design evolution.
The oval windows are an engineering innovation which * saves lives. If the airplane windows were rectangular as like our house windows, the airplane would have been disintegrated in the air.
To allow planes to fly at high altitudes, airlines engineers had to make changes in the design. The rectangular or squarish windows are problematic in # high-altitude flights due to the slight difference between the atmospheric and inside cabin pressure. Such pressure differences subject window frames to great tension. This makes that windows frames are subject to a high pressure. This tension is bigger greater in pointed squares. Nevertheless In contrast, this tension flows more smoothly over a circular or oval shape.

Hi Lidia,

If I may share some suggestions:

^ We "stare" at someone or something if we are expressing our annoyance or displeasure with an angry look. Therefore, I changed it to "marvel" to mean that you are looking at something in wonder and admiration.

* Sometimes, a sentence may include other pieces of information that may distract us from the subject-verb agreement. If we ask ourselves WHAT "saves" lives, the answer would be "an engineering innovation" (singular noun) instead of "The oval windows" (plural noun). Therefore, we need to use the singular form of "save" which is "saves".

# Both words are adjectives describing "flight" (noun). We hyphenate them to form a compound adjective. Another example: five-year-old boy. All three words are adjectives describing the boy (noun).

Hope this helps.

Very interesting topic and great writing, too. Thanks for the sharing :) Only one typo - wishing And I think it is “an” oval ... since the pronunciation of "oval" starts with a vowel...?!
