How do tattoos of men differ from the ones women choose?
Tattooing is an art form which means to change a skin color by inserting a pigment into it. According to historians, the prehistoric people practiced tattooing at least 12,000 years ago. Nowadays this form of art is more popular and socially acceptable than ever. Despite the fact that both men and women practicing it, there are a lot of differences in which tattoos they are choose and why. Let us talk about these contrasts.
First, let us talk about men. According to the statistics, there are more men who have tattoos than women. For example, in the U.S., it is 15% of men versus 13% of women. Then, there is a difference in which places on their bodies men prefer to have tattoos. The most popular places are backs and shoulders. Also, they usually give preferences to big arts with a strong graphical base. Due to a complexity and size of such kind of tattoos, the process of tattooing can be very painful for men, because they have more lower pain threshold.
Women, on the other hand, try to get more meaningful tattoos. Due to a strong emotional attachment to tattoos, more women regret about them than men. Usually, they prefer smaller in size tattoo and placed it on the wrist or ankle. As a rule, women can stand the pain much easier than man, because women have more higher pain threshold. It makes the process of tattooing less painful. Also, there is a scientific fact that women’s skin is softer than men’s and this can affect the absorbency of the tattoo ink.
Men and women perceive tattoos of each other in the different way. According to studies of psychologist Nicolas Guéguen of the Université de Bretagne-Sud, men tend to overestimate women's sexual intentions. They perceive tattooed women as more liberated, and likely try to get to know her. Women, in turn, perceive tattooed men as more masculine, dominant and aggressive. But both men and women assessed tattooed person as worse potential partner and parent than person without tattoos.
As stated above, there are a lot of differences in men's and women's tattoos. Men prefer to get more big in size, graphically based tattoos while women prefer to get something small, symbolic or personal. In spite of those differences, the popularity of tattooing is growing year by year in those and others. However, well-chosen tattoo can properly complement a person's style.
